October 10, 2010  Remo S. and Sheila A. Galvagno Scholarship, UW

Dear UW Alumni Association,

Grab your coat and get your hat
Leave your worries on the doorstep
Life can be so sweet
On the sunny side of the street

There is a song I know that always comes to mind when I stand and count my blessings.  The song On the Sunny Side of the Street sums up how I feel about my life since I have been in school.  For an almost fifty-year-old to decide that a college education is the path to be taken, I literally had to “leave my worries at the doorstep,” if I hadn’t…well then, I would never have got to stand here on the sunny side of the street.  I am honored to be the recipient of the Remo S. and Sheila A. Galvagno Scholarship.  Thanks to your generous support, I embark on this last year here at the UW without money worries.  Life for me is on the sunny side of the street.

I always like to say that coming to college was for me, not a dream deferred, but a dream never once thought attainable.  But here I stand on that very sunny side of the street.  Although there are many challenges and road bumps ahead of me I know that my road has been made more smooth by your financial help.

I used to walk in the shade with them blues on parade
Now I’m not afraid
I’m crossing over and walking in clovers

I am four years into my college career, not counting the extra year I spent doing math, and I am very proud of my progress here at the UW.  This fall I am researching and applying to grad schools as my plan is enter a PhD program next fall.  My vision after my PhD. is to do research, teach and publish at a large university, hopefully come home to the UW.  I feel fortunate attending the UW because I have been able to give as well as receive help from the various programs here at the school.

When Courtney Acitelli called me and told me that I had won I was so excited I had to call everybody I knew and tell them. Then I got the e-mail conformation of the scholarship. In the e-mail Courtney indicated that the money would be placed in my account every quarter. I had to read the e-mail about three times because I thought that the scholarship paid for just one quarter. I went and reread about the scholarship and then had to sit down and freak out all over again. Wow…Wow. A whole year…my last year here, how fabulous. Earlier, I said I was honored…let’s change that to thrilled.

That happy tune is your step
Life can be so sweet
On the sunny side of the street

What can I say life is good!!! When I am an alumna (with a job) I will follow in the foundations example and reach back my hand to help others climb this golden stair.  One day, I have no doubt, that I will join those in the Ivory Towers.  Except my tower will be lit up like a lighthouse, with a beam that beckons and welcomes all. Your financial help is allowing me to spend this last year at the UW working on projects that will help me learn how best to bring that light. I want everyone on the sunny side with me.

There will be goldust at my feet
On the sunny sunny side of the street

Once again, I offer my most heartfelt thanks for your generosity in making me a recipient of the Remo S. and Sheila A. Galvagno Scholarship.

Sincerely, Venetia Ponds

UW Huskies on the Move

Air Van Moving is the Official Mover of Husky Athletics and recently revealed their New Husky truck on YouTube! We visited the UW campus to see what goes into packing up the football team’s equipment for a game on the road.  Our Air Van Moving team lead for the Husky away games is Rich E.  He personally handles all the equipment and creates an inventory list as it is loaded onto the Air Van Moving Husky Truck. Upon Rich’s arrival 2 other UW Equipment managers, Bart and Jose, join him to help load the truck.  Bart is the Head equipment manager for the Husky Football Team and Jose is one of three full-time equipment managers that work for Bart.  Bart has been with The University of Washington since 1983. He has 3 full time managers that work for him and 11 student equipment managers.  When asked about the most interesting aspects of his job he replied, “I’ve been working here so long that now I’m starting to see the kids of players who were here in the 80’s come here to play.”  Bart mentioned one player in particular by the name of Tony Wroten Jr. who announced earlier this month that he would be playing basketball at the University of Washington.  He is a 6’5 guard from Garfield HS in Seattle and is rated as one of the top guards in the country. His father, Tony Wroten Sr. attended UW and was a TE for Don James.

Here are some of the items that the Huskies bring along for their away games:

  • 6 cool zone fans
  • Spin Bike for the sidelines
  • 4 boxes of communication equipment for the coaching staff
  • DVD players to watch film during pre-game meetings
  • Extra shoes:  one pair of each size and style, approximately 60 pairs total.
  • Extra helmets:  They currently have 4 styles of helmets and bring along one of each size in all 4 styles
  • A pallet of water and Gatorade [280 bottles] for the hotel
  • Traveling Husky store
  • Candy for the coaches

Cool Facts:

  • The team uses up to 400 footballs a year depending on weather.  Last year they used 225.
  • The UW employs 2 full-time laundry personnel.
  • The student exercise facility washes 500,000 pounds of towels per year.
  • 250,000 pounds of towels are washed each year for all Husky athletes.
  • The team travels with 4 video people.  They tape the game from various angles [field level, end zone, upper deck]
